What is a sabbatical? Traditionally...it's been "a period of paid leave granted to a university teacher or other worker for study or travel, traditionally one year for every seven years worked." However, things are changing...people outside academia are starting to take "sabbaticals" or breaks from life...
I took a break from Corporate America and spent 15 months on a volunteer & travel sabbatical around Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It rejuvenated me and changed my perspective. And the cost of traveling to 20+ countries? Half the cost of living in my hometown of San Francisco.
Looking for a new life in Europe? Or high-quality education? I also completed a Masters program in the Netherlands, where the cost of education is actually affordable and quality high. And with a newly minted European degree, many people start their new lives here.
And I've had quite a few friends ask me about the experience and how to do it, so I thought I'd put it out here if anyone wants to learn more.
If you're interested in chatting about a career sabbatical, we can chat over Skype/phone-call/ in- person (currently in Netherlands):
