We can talk about vocational options, social integration, excess ability challenges, skills training, and finding positive ways to cope with changes and challenges associated with so-called disability. We can locate resources in your area covering all of the above life areas. We can also discuss issues related to family relationships, finding dates or life Partners, and dealing with societies attitudes about people who don't meet the so-called standard. Finally, we can delve in to the nitty-gritty of the psychology and sociology of disability to help you discover where basic believes about disability come from and how we can transform them for a better society in general and a better life for you.
Training & Qualifications
First and foremost, I am a successful blind person. I live on my own, have a job, hang out with friends, and lead a life comparable to anybody else. However, I had to take some steps to get there and I can share my journey with you in hopes you will find some idea you can put to use in your life.
I am a cane travel instructor working in the field of vocational rehabilitation. In other words, I teach blind people how to get around in their homes, at the job, and in their communities. I also teach other skills blind people need to be self-sufficient such as reading, writing, Computer literacy, personal and home management, medical management, self advocacy skills, and social skills. I have been working in this field in a number of capacities for 13 years total; seven of these as a volunteer and six as a professional. Though the skills for dealing with other disabilities might be different from blindness, the basic process is still the same.
I have been an advocate in the disability community for some time. I am a member of the National Federation of the Blind and have participated in other disability community groups and activities. I am an officer on the local and state level of the Federation. As such, I have pointed several new members in the right direction to help them achieve their goals.
I have a bachelors degree with emphasis in social aspects of blindness and disability and a masters in industrial organizational psychology focusing on blindness. These degrees cover aspects of blindness and a disability through the life course. I have some background knowledge on non-western cultures and their views on disability.
Finally, I have background in intersectional identity. So for instants, I have studied the impact of race or gender identity on disability and vice versa.
