Feedback: One Story/Novel Chapter

15

15 per unit - Virtual OK - Posted Jan 12, 2019

You've written some literary prose and you've polished it enough that you want to know what another human being thinks of it. I can be that human being! I provide feedback via a form that looks at:

*Plot
*Characters
*Setting
*Dialogue
*Style

and provide any other additional comments not covered by the above. This feedback also includes a light copyedit, either in the whole piece or the first few pages. A "light copyedit" includes:

*Making sure you've used punctuation correctly and consistently.
*Fixing any embarrassing, hard-to-catch typos or spelling errors.
*Addressing any possible ambiguity or confusion in your prose.
*Catching inadvertently hurtful or discriminatory language.

This service does NOT include:

*Rewriting your work.
*Making your manuscript publisher- or agent-ready.
*A long-term crit/feedback relationship.
*Making you sound "like me."

My goal is to give you concrete, actionable feedback so that your story can be the best version of itself. The Simbi deal is for one short story (or one chapter in a novel). I may adjust the price upwards or downwards depending on the size and scope of the project. If you REALLY like my feedback, we can discuss an on-going critique exchange and what that might entail.

I read a lot across a variety of genres, but I particularly enjoy reading the most in science fiction, fantasy, and literary fiction, so I'm the most familiar with those conventions and tropes: if your story falls into one of those categories I'm probably part of your target audience. I'm much less familiar with crime, romance, and thrillers. I'm also familiar with YA, but it's not my favorite.

Training & Qualifications

I have a BA in English (Creative Writing) from Hamilton College, and worked as a freelance copyeditor from 2013 to 2018. I maintain a long-running writing Meetup and have been a founding member of two successful critique groups.

About Katherine Koba

Everything I enjoy comes down to words, details, and helping and educating others. In my work life, I'm a professional Swedish -> English translator. I work with corporate documents: everything fr...om annual and interim reports to internal memos to press releases. I was a freelance copyeditor and ESL tutor before that. Before that I spent two years teaching English at cram schools in South Korea, and before THAT I was a cave tour guide. In my fun life, I co-organize a local writing Meetup, translate semi-obscure Swedish women writers into English, and read a lot. I also work on my own writing projects, which tend to be character-driven SF/F and literary novels. I'm a bit of a language nerd, too; I study Russian and Korean in my spare time, and try to keep up my high school German and college French. I also like to surprise people with postcards and tea and other fun things in the mail!show more
