I will answer your Q's on people on bikes as best I can.
In Portland I get two asked most, do you get wet?
Yes, I do. It rains 6-9 months a year here. My trick is keeping my undies and socks dry, it makes a huge difference.
Have you been hit by a car?
Yes twice, and almost twice; one of those would have ended me. I ride like a rabbit through a dog park now.
Over my life I have chosen to live without a car twice, and still not sure how one snuck up in the middle. I ride hours a day every day to approximately 10k miles a year. I've broken 7 bike frames and "specialized" in which brand chooses to offer meaningless warentees. Hint there Mike Sinard.

Training & Qualifications
I am good at not car life. I have stolen and rehabilitateed an abandoned bike in Guam. I commuted more than 2 hours a day for years on a bike; through ice storms and rain when they added their unique assistance to the ride.
