A Peek Into the Abyss - ADHD help
3
Living with ADHD isn’t easy for anyone involved. Child, adult, family member; it can really be a toss up whether who it’s harder on. Is it the person that hasn’t yet or is being diagnosed? Or is it those people that care about them? Too often either or both sides are left feeling lonely and lost, not knowing what to do or where to go.
I want to tell you there is hope and you are absolutely not alone. I’m one of the rare ones. I can actually speak with experience equally to both sides of the coin.
Training & Qualifications
Experience to speak to family or friends:
Almost 5 years ago now, I went through the process of my daughter being diagnosed with ADHD. She had shown all the signs for some time but her father and I had just chocked everything up to being normal kid stuff. It wasn’t until she entered school that it was brought to our attention that these things weren’t just normal kid stuff. She was being incredibly disruptive in class, she had zero impulse control in doing or taking what she wanted, and worst was the fact that she wasn’t making any friends. She was just too unpredictable and the other kids avoided her. She would have these incredible meltdowns when she didn’t get her way and she would fight tooth and nail anyone that tried to intervene. In October of Kindergarten, she was facing suspension and we were left with no choice, we had to get her help.
Experience to speak to those suffering:
I must’ve slipped through the cracks somehow. It wasn’t until a couple of years after my daughter’s dianosis that I started to really struggle. I had always managed to get by before, but now certain behaviors and traits were getting out of control. They were starting to destroy my relationships with people I cared about. It didn’t matter what I did, I just could not seem to do anything right. With every step I tried to take forward all that seemed to happen was I made things worse. I was at the end of my rope and completely defeated. At the age of 30 I was finally diagnosed as having ADHD myself.
